Arguably, the main purpose of the United States education system is to prepare the next generation of productive citizens to have a successful future which contributes to the improvement and advancement of society. Issues arise when a school is faced with students who require more than the typical student in order to reach this goal.
A specific example of this is seen with limited English proficient (LEP) students—those students who immigrated here and do not have knowledge of English. It is often considered necessary to be fluent and literate in English in order to be successful in U.S. society, as English is the majority language. Thus, one is presented with the question of how to best educate these LEP students, also known as English Language Learner (ELLs) so that their education must be equally as valuable as a student who is already proficient in English. This website will explore and attempt to answer this question.
